About the event
There's a shooting. Journalists show up and take video of a police car, shell casings, a draped body, neighbors crying. If they're lucky, and they have time, they'll interview a close relative. And then they're gone, leaving behind grief and fear. Even the most empathetic reporter's story presents a sensationalized view of the event because their editor wants flash to attract readers and viewers.
This 28-minute documentary presents the experiences of people in Philadelphia who have been affected by record-setting violence and the media's coverage of it. They offer a roadmap for how both journalists and news consumers can do better. See the film and hear from the producers about their research and potential solutions. A reception follows the panel discussion.
